Gifts for a Rangers fan they'll be glad to get

Framed Nine in a row print, black frame, 4-4-2 in Rangers shirts: Andy Goram; Gary Stevens, Richard Gough, John Brown, David Robertson; Brian Laudrup, Stuart McCall, Paul Gascoigne, Ian Ferguson; Ally McCoist, Mark Hateley. Manager Walter Smith

Most Rangers fans over 40 will tell you where they were when Laudrup headed in at Tannadice. That was 7 May 1997, and it won the ninth title in a row. The older ones go back further, to Barcelona in 1972. The younger lot have 55, won unbeaten in 2020-21, and the trip to Seville a year later. Work out which of those your fan belongs to before you start.

Small things, under £20

An old programme. Find out the date of their first game, or the one they still bring up after a few drinks, and look for that programme second-hand. Most go for a few quid. For a lot of fans it'll be Dundee United away on 7 May 1997, the Tannadice game, when Laudrup headed in Charlie Miller's cross and the ninth title was done. If they were there, or even if they just remember hearing it, that programme will mean more to them than anything else on this page. For someone older, try anything from the 1972 Cup Winners' Cup run. Some listings use stock photos, so ask to see the actual copy before you pay.

A book. Gascoigne's Gazza: My Story covers his Ibrox years, including the hat-trick against Aberdeen in April 1996 that won title eight, and a fair amount of the mess around it. Souness wrote Football: My Life, My Passion, and as the manager who brought Terry Butcher and Chris Woods up from England in 1986, he's got plenty of Rangers in it.

A scarf from Manchester 2008 or Seville 2022. They lost both, Seville on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt. People still buy the scarves.

Middle of the range

A retro shirt from their years. Get the era right. The nine-in-a-row crowd want McEwan's Lager across the front. Remakes are cheap and easy to find. Originals cost more, and if you go for one, check the label. Nineties sizes come up big.

An Ibrox stadium tour. Ask anyone who's done it and they'll mention the marble staircase first. It suits the fan who lives away and hardly gets to the ground. If they're at Ibrox every other Saturday, I'd spend the money on something else.

Club 1872 membership, if they care who owns the club. They'll know what it is. If they'd rather the money went somewhere useful, the Rangers Charity Foundation is the club's own charity, and a donation in their name fits in a card.

A print of Ibrox. Local photographers sell shots of the Bill Struth Main Stand, often at night or in snow.

Bigger presents

Match tickets. Fair warning, this is harder than it sounds. Home league games sell out to season ticket holders, so you're looking at cup ties and European nights, or a quiet word with someone who has a season ticket. An away day together is worth a thought too.

A signed shirt or photo. This is where people get stung. Ask for a certificate. Buy from someone you can trace and walk away from a cheap signed McCoist shirt.

Their old shirt, framed. This one needs a bit of sneaking about. If they've kept a shirt from when they were a kid, it's probably folded up in a drawer or in a box in the loft, and they haven't looked at it in years. Borrow it without telling them and take it to a framer for a box frame. Give yourself a few weeks, because a decent framer won't rush it, and expect it to cost more than you'd guess, quite possibly more than the shirt did in the first place. Then hand it back on the wall.

A framed XI

That's what we make, so I'll keep it short. There's a ready-made Rangers 1972 Cup Winners' Cup XI from £69, with McCloy in goal, Greig as captain, Stein and Johnston (twice) with the goals and Willie Waddell in charge.

For most fans under 50, though, it's the nine-in-a-row side. This is mine:

Framed Nine in a row print, black frame, 4-4-2 in Rangers shirts: Andy Goram; Gary Stevens, Richard Gough, John Brown, David Robertson; Brian Laudrup, Stuart McCall, Paul Gascoigne, Ian Ferguson; Ally McCoist, Mark Hateley. Manager Walter Smith

Build this XI yourself

Goram; Stevens, Gough, Brown, Robertson; Laudrup, McCall, Gascoigne, Ian Ferguson; McCoist, Hateley. Walter Smith as manager.

Goram, who was in goal for six of the nine, is easy. So are McCoist and Hateley. The fight is in midfield, and it's really about Ian Durrant. Plenty of fans will tell you he'd walk into any Rangers midfield if Neil Simpson hadn't gone through him at Pittodrie in October 1988, and they might be right. He also played far more games for the club than Gascoigne. But I'm picking for the run, and for me Gazza's 1995-96, finished off with that hat-trick against Aberdeen, is the best season any Rangers midfielder had in those nine years, so he gets the shirt and Durrant fans can write in.

At the back I'd have Brown over Butcher, and I don't think it's that close. Butcher was the better centre half. He was also off to Coventry in November 1990 with two of the nine won, while Brown was still there through the nineties. Mark Walters, Pieter Huistra and Mikhailichenko all have a case on the left, and you can swap any of them in before it's printed.

Or skip the famous names and do their own Sunday side in royal blue, with the pub's name as the title and a line from you underneath. You can build any Rangers team from any era in the YourXI builder, from 11-a-side down to five-a-side, with the kit, pitch, title and message up to you, and we email you a proof before anything's printed. It's £99 for 12x16 in or £149 for 18x24 in, black or white frame, with free UK delivery. The rest of the ready-made sides are in Rangers prints.

Quick answers

What's a good Rangers gift under £20? An old programme from a game that matters to them, or one of the two books above.

What can I give at the last minute? An Ibrox tour, a Club 1872 membership or a donation to the Rangers Charity Foundation. All three fit in a card.
