Gifts for a Leeds fan, from Revie books to a framed XI

Framed FA Cup winners 1972 print, black frame, 4-4-2 in Leeds United shirts: David Harvey; Paul Reaney, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Paul Madeley; Peter Lorimer, Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles, Eddie Gray; Allan Clarke, Mick Jones. Manager Don Revie

Ask a Leeds fan who their Leeds is and you'll get Bremner and Giles, or Wilko and Strachan in '92, or Viduka scoring all four against Liverpool, or Bielsa crouched on his bucket, or the Farke side that came back up in 2025, so work out which one before you spend anything and buy for that.

Days out

1. An Elland Road stadium tour. Dressing rooms, the tunnel, the walk out to the pitch. Tour dates move around the fixture list, so check the club site before you write a date in a card.

2. A membership. If they actually want to get in, buy the membership. Most tickets that aren't held by season ticket holders go to members first, and without one a ticket voucher can sit in a drawer all season.

3. The statues, then a pint at the Peacock. Bremner since 1999, Revie since 2012, then the Peacock across the road. Costs you a round.

Books and the odd record

4. Revie: Revered and Reviled by Richard Sutcliffe. A proper biography, and a fair one, which Revie doesn't always get. It goes from a Second Division club to one of the best sides in Europe, then through the England years and the way he left.

5. Marching On Together by Eddie Gray. Gray was player, coach and manager at Elland Road, so he saw nearly all of it from the inside. Anyone who still talks about his goal against Burnley in 1970 will want this one.

6. The Damned Utd by David Peace. This comes with a warning. It's a novel, out in 2006, about Brian Clough's 44 days in charge in 1974, and it's hard on the Leeds players. Johnny Giles took legal action over how he was written. Plenty of fans read it and loved it anyway, because Peace gets the paranoia and the grudges of that summer better than any history does. Others will hand it straight back to you. The 2009 film with Michael Sheen is the gentler way in if you're not sure. Know your fan before you wrap it.

7. The 1972 Cup final single on vinyl. The squad made a record for the final, and the B-side was "Leeds! Leeds! Leeds!", which became "Marching On Together". Original 7-inch copies still turn up second-hand, and one goes in a frame next to the programme from the same day.

Things to wear or keep

8. A retro shirt from their era. The all-white 70s one with the smiley badge for the older lot, the 1991-92 shirt for anyone who still says "Wilko" with real affection, something from 2000-01 for the Viduka, Kewell and Smith years.

9. A programme from their first game. My favourite on the list, and usually cheap. Find out the date quietly, from a brother or an old mate, and look on the second-hand sites. Revie-era and early 90s programmes aren't hard to come by.

10. Signed stuff, with care. A Strachan or Batty signed photo would go down well with anyone from the '92 crowd. It's also a market full of fakes, so buy with a certificate, from a seller you can trace, and walk away if the price looks too kind.

Something for the wall

11. A framed XI. Yes, we make these. The obvious Leeds one is the side that won the centenary FA Cup final on 6 May 1972, beating Arsenal 1-0 with Allan Clarke's diving header.

Harvey; Reaney, Charlton, Hunter, Madeley; Lorimer, Bremner, Giles, Gray; Clarke, Jones.

Madeley was at left back that day because Terry Cooper had broken his leg a few weeks before. Mick Jones put in the cross for Clarke's goal, then dislocated his elbow late on, and Norman Hunter helped him up the steps to get his medal.

Then there's the row. The 1972 Cup side, or the 1974 champions who went the first 29 league games unbeaten? I'd frame '74, because the league was the harder thing to win, but the Cup final is the day people actually remember. And if your fan is still angry about Lorimer's goal being chalked off in Paris in 1975, you already know which Revie side they'd want on the wall.

We have the 1972 Cup winners ready-made, plus a Don Revie XI and a David O'Leary XI for the 2001 crowd. A custom one can be more personal, though. Wilkinson's 1992 champions with Strachan, McAllister, Speed and Batty across the middle. The side they'd pick themselves, with Radebe and Viduka in it, or Pablo Hernández if they grew up on Bielsa. Or just their Sunday team in white, with a line from you along the bottom.
